The Havanese is the National Dog of Cuba and is the only native breed from that country. The Havanese, is also known as the Havana silk dog and the Havanese Bichon, is a small but sturdy breed that is very intelligent. The breed is famous for its friendly disposition, its ability to adapt to many different climates and living situations, and to be above all else, a loyal and loving companion.
The Havanese Dog finds its origins going back to the time of the discovery of the New World. Spanish ship captains would bring these little dogs as gifts to the Cuban aristocrats as a gift to help open trade. The Havanese became a very popular and sought after companion up to the time of the Cuban Revolution, when because of its consideration as a status symbol, was nearly eradicated to extinction. In the 1970's, a few Americans became interested in this rare breed, and with only 11 of the original Cuban Havanese left, the breed was brought back to the Havanese we have now with the help of some of the original European bloodlines.
The Havanese  is a very healthy and playful dog. Unlike most small breeds, the Havanese is not a fragile dog, but is strong and sturdy. This breed is also very well known for its high intelligence and and quick learning. Because of these traits, the Havanese do very well in agility and obedience competitions .
The appearance of the Havanese is also unique to the breed. The hair of the Havanese is a double coat, with a soft, silky under coat covered by a longer, wavy outer coat. The Havanese is considered a "hair" dog and not a "fur" dog. What the difference of a hair dog is, is it is non-shedding and does not produce oil. Fur oil is what causes a fur dog to have an odor and also produce dander. Dander is what causes some people to develop an allergic reaction to dogs.Because of this the Havanese is often considered"hypoallergenic". This breed does not shed, but still does need to be groomed and brushed out a few times a week to remove dead hair and prevent matting.
The disposition of the Havanese puppy is also something that sets this breed apart. The Havanese is known to get along well with other pets and is very good with children. It is also very alert and will let you know when a stranger is near. Havanese always make a great family pet, but they always seem to become attached to their favorite person. The Havanese, because of it size, makes a great apartment dog as well as adapting to either city or country life.

Missi's Havanese puppies
Our love for the Havanese breed started about 8 years ago. We were spending a summer day in the nearby city of Saugatuck, Michigan shopping for antiques, when a lady came into the shop we were visiting with a beautiful little long haired dog. My daughter was quickly attracted to this little guy and his very happy nature and enthusiasm for attention made my entire family become captivated with this dog. I asked the owner what type of dog she had, and she explained that this was a Havanese. She also told me that she had her dog flown in from Florida. I was hooked. As soon as I got home, I started looking on line for any information I could find on the Havanese breed and to find a good Havanese breeder.
After many nights of reading about the breed and researching havanese breeders and bloodlines, we decided that we had to have our own Havanese puppy. It was not an easy decision for me, because in the past I had raised Boxers and had always been a large dog person. From my past experience in dog breeding and an understanding of the difference that good genetics can play in a dog's long term health, I started to search for a good, quality Havanese puppy and Havanese Breeders. This was not as simple as I thought.
Because of the rareness of the breed, most of the Havanese puppies I was finding were often sharing two, three or even more related dogs in their pedigree. This type of inbreeding will always lead to health problems in later years. After searching for almost 2 years, I finally found our first little girl "Rosses' Grand Happiness" in Indiana. She was a beautiful, small, little puppy with very good bloodlines, and she was also a true Chocolate. A Chocolate Havanese will have brown nose, paw pads and lips, amber eyes and must have a patch of "mocha" at least covering 1 square inch. The Chocolate in the Havanese line are the rarest of the colors. We drove down to Western Indiana to meet this little girl and fell in love.
After Happi had grown, we decided that we would find a male. I started checking Havanese breeders online again, and I found a perfect male located near Miami, Florida. We chose Rosses' Grand Causation for his size, face and his strong bloodlines. Cause has several Champions, Grand Champions and International Grand Champions in his bloodline. His great-grandfather is also the International Grand Champion, Mucho Bravo Wild Willy. From these two dogs, this is how we started breeding Havanese. Many people ask me why we have gone to so much trouble and expense to buy dogs with Champion Bloodlines. The answer is simple. GENETICS. Champion Bloodlines mean these dogs' parents and grandparents had no defects, and have been judged by trained show professionals to be the best examples of the breed, with no health issues and NO BAD GENES to pass on to offspring. Good GENES simply mean a healthy dog with a long happy life!

Information for New puppy Owners

At Rosses' Grand Havanese we have spent much time and effort in hand picking our Havanese parents to produce beautiful, healthy puppies. Our puppies are not the most expensive, but also they are not the cheapest. You can expect to pay between $1500-$3500 for a good quality havanese puppy. If you find a puppy that is less than that, a good question to ask is simply why? We all must remember the Yugo was the cheapest car built and those that bought them soon found out why! You can often save a money up front buying a cheap havanese and then pay the money to the vet later! We give with every puppy form Rosses' Grand Havanese a FULL 5 YEAR Genetic Warrantry(most breeders offer only a 1 year warranty) Health Certificate, Vet check and first vaccines, Registration papers, my personal cell phone number that you can call anytime when you need help or information, whenever you need it. We also make the promise that we will be there for you if for any reason you can no longer keep your havanese, we will happily allow it to return to our home. This is what we offer you with every puppy that comes from our home.

Also you have our promise that your puppy has never lived in a dog run or a cage in someones backyard. Come visit us at any time! Your AKC Havanese puppy was born in our family room, raised inside our home, played with and pampered by our daughters and spoiled before you ever meet them! Our Havanese dogs really are part of our family and by the the time that your puppy is ready for your home, there are people in our home that will miss him or her. So please remember to send us pictures and updates. These are the reasons why our puppies are worth a little extra!

We require everyone to fill out a New Puppy Owner Application form. If you are considering one our our Havanese Puppies, please send us an e-mail or information form and we will e-mail you an application. We take pride in our puppies and we want to make sure that every puppy is placed in a home that will be a healthy environment for both your family and the puppy.
